Professional Experience
Greg Everts is a business and intellectual property litigator with extensive experience in trials, hearings, arbitrations, settlement negotiations, and defense of federal and state regulatory enforcement actions. His primary practice involves breach of contract claims, business torts, trade secret and non-compete disputes, securities and brokerage disputes, and claims of trademark and copyright infringement, false advertising, deceptive trade practices, and unfair competition. In addition, he has defended numerous companies in regulatory enforcement actions brought by state and federal government agencies. Greg is a member of Quarles & Brady’s Commercial Litigation, Intellectual Property Litigation, and Securities Litigation subgroups.

Greg brings to Quarles & Brady a unique background in government and regulatory litigation. He spent 10 years in the legislative and executive branches of the federal government, including seven years with the U.S. Justice Department. He was a Congressional press secretary and legislative assistant before earning a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from Princeton University. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, and joined the U.S. Department of Justice as a Trial Attorney in the Office of Consumer Litigation, where he was lead attorney in dozens of criminal prosecutions and civil enforcement actions brought under federal fraud and consumer protection statutes. He spent 15 months on assignment at the White House, working as Associate Counsel in the Office of the Vice President and Special Counsel to the President’s Crime Prevention Counsel.

Greg’s litigation experience includes:
  • Representing a Wisconsin stone fabricator in litigation to safeguard a multimillion-dollar contract for construction work on the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center in Washington, D.C. Greg was lead counsel in a federal court lawsuit against the project’s general contractor and other parties, filed to enforce the client’s exclusivity agreement with a supplier. He obtained an injunction from the federal court — a rare result in a breach of contract case — that enforced the exclusivity agreement and ensured the client’s involvement in this historic construction project.

  • Defending a Wisconsin manufacturer in federal court against claims of trade secret theft and breach of a non-compete agreement. Greg won a ruling from the court that invalidated the non-compete of a key employee hired by the client from the opposing company, and soon thereafter negotiated a settlement in which the trade secret claims and all other claims were dropped.

  • Representing broker-dealers and investment advisers against claims of misrepresentation, breach of fiduciary duty, negligence, lack of suitability, and other claims of wrongdoing in connection with the sale of securities.

  • Defending companies and individuals in regulatory investigations and lawsuits, including matters involving the Federal Trade Commission (FTC Act); U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act); U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (Consumer Product Safety Act); Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA); Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI), including its Division of Securities; Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI); Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (Unfair Sales Act, weights and measures, scanner accuracy, and other matters); and Wisconsin Ethics and Elections Boards (now Government Accountability Office).

  • Representing a famous, watermelon-smashing comedian in a federal lawsuit to enforce his trademark rights and right of publicity, and suing for false advertising and unfair competition under the Lanham Act, in a case that attracted tabloid media interest. Greg and his partner won a preliminary injunction from the court, and then obtained a settlement, including a permanent injunction, against the competitor and his promoter, with complete protection of the client’s comedy act.

  • Representing the inventor of the electronic music synthesizer in a federal lawsuit alleging trademark infringement, false advertising (Lanham Act), unfair competition, and infringement of the client’s right of publicity. The case was unique in that, years earlier, this client had signed away the trademark rights to his name. After expedited discovery, and a motion for preliminary injunction, Greg and his partner were able to gain a complete restoration of the client’s trademark rights.
