Professional Experience
Adrianne C. Mazura represents employers in all areas of labor and employment law. Ms. Mazura has represented employers before the National Labor Relations Board and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as well as before numerous state agencies, courts and arbitration panels. Her work as national labor and employment counsel for a telecommunications company has involved her in every area of employment law including union organizing campaigns, collective bargaining negotiations, and defense of numerous individual and multiparty cases throughout the country. Ms. Mazura's other clients include transportation companies, manufacturers, professional organizations and financial institutions.
Some of Ms. Mazura’s experience includes the following:
- Defending a sex discrimination class action brought by applicants at a Canadian-based energy company doing business in Ohio.
- Defending an ADEA collective action brought by several hundred employees of a pharmaceutical company laid off across the country by a predecessor employer.
- Defending a sexual harassment and discrimination class action brought by a group of female employees against an insurance company.
- Defending a class action brought against a municipal transportation provider alleging disability discrimination under the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA in the matter of access to public transportation.
- Defending employers in actions brought by the EEOC including, among others, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. World Kitchen. Inc., Case No. 1 :05-cv-1970 (M.D. Penn.) (sex discrimination).
- Obtaining numerous defense verdicts in jury and bench trials and administrative hearings in individual plaintiff cases alleging harassment, retaliation, sex discrimination, race discrimination, marital status discrimination, disability discrimination, national origin discrimination and age discrimination.
- Obtaining judgment on various types of employment discrimination cases and successfully defending the verdicts on appeal including the following: Myers v. U.S. Cellular, 2007 WL 4462150 (6th Cir. 2007) (unpublished) (sex discrimination); Carter v. Northwest Airlines. Inc., 93 Fed. Appx. 944 (7th Cir. Mar. 23, 2004) (disability discrimination); Johnson v. Spiegel Inc., 278 III.App.3d 1125 (1st Dist. 1996) (retaliation); Pierson v. University Orthopaedics, 282 III.App.3d 339 (1st Dist. 1996) (upholding denial of preliminary injunctive relief under the Illinois Human Rights Act); Carter v. Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago, 271 III.App.3d 1061 (1st Dist. 1995) (retaliation).
Ms. Mazura is a life fellow of the American Bar Foundation for which she also serves as outside employment counsel. In 2008, she was named chair of the board of directors of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, an independent, self-supporting nonprofit corporation that provides career-long practice guidance and tools to Illinois lawyers and judges. She has been a member of the ALI-ABA Advisory Panel on Employment and Labor Law.
The respected English research firm Chambers & Partners cites her in
Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, describing her as “excellent” and noting that her clients say they “can place complete confidence in her — her knowledge, pragmatism, efficiency and negotiation skills are remarkable.” In 2004, Ms. Mazura was named an Illinois Leading Lawyer in two categories: employment law — management and labor law — management. Since 2005, she has been selected for inclusion in the
Illinois Super Lawyers® lists, in 2012, being named one of the Top 50 Women Illinois Super Lawyers.
In 2007, Ms. Mazura was inducted as a Fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. The College is an independent organization that recognizes those who, by long and outstanding service, have distinguished themselves as leaders in the field of labor and employment law. Election as a Fellow is the highest recognition by one’s colleagues of sustained outstanding performance in the profession, exemplifying integrity, dedication and excellence.
She is an author and frequent lecturer on labor law and related topics. Ms. Mazura has co-authored “What To Do When The Union Calls” for the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry and Drug Testing In The Workplace, which was jointly published by the Bureau of National Affairs and the American Society for Clinical Pathologists. She was editor of the most recent edition of the
Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education Employment Discrimination Handbook, and has served as an outside reviewer for the American Bar Association’s Division of Public Education.
