Topic: Welcome / Orientation Week (May 18, 2009)

The first week of the summer program flew by quickly.  While the first few days consisted mostly of orientation and training, by the end of the week, I had already completed two work assignments, and had a couple of other projects to work on next.  Because I enjoy learning new things, everything keeps me interested from start-to-finish at this point.  Everybody here is eager to help and to answer my questions, and several people pop their head into my office periodically to see how things are going.  There is no doubt that the summer will be over before I know it.  I can't wait to get to know more people in the office and to learn different areas of the law.

Orientation week was fantastic.  The activities were very organized, which allowed us to quickly get acclimated.  Contrary to what many assume about Milwaukee, the weather has been great, especially considering that it is only the middle of May.  The attorneys and staff have been incredibly helpful and friendly.  I doubt anyone could spend more than a few hours at Quarles & Brady and not immediately feel at home.

From the time I first set foot in the office, I felt welcome at Quarles & Brady.  Everyone - associates, partners, staff - wore a smile.  I was told "if there is anything you need me to help you with, let me know" so many times I began to wonder if it was a firm motto.  The atmosphere helped calm the "new-job" jitters quickly, and allowed me to focus on the important stuff at hand - learning how to become a productive member of the Quarles & Brady team.

Our first week at Quarles is complete, and the summer is off to a fast start.  This week, we had the opportunity to meet the summer associate committee and to hear their thoughts about the summer program and their individual practice areas.  On Thursday evening, we had a welcome reception where many attorneys stopped by to introduce themselves and meet the summer associates.  My initial impression is that the attorneys and staff at this firm are committed to helping us grow as professionals and to achieve our goals as summer associates.  For instance, while completing my first work assignment, I found that several attorneys were more than willing to answer my questions and point me in the right direction.  It is clear that this firm is committed to providing us with the resources and experience we need to succeed.  This is going to be a great summer.

The introduction part of the Quarles summer program was excellent, considering the content of most introductory days.  The majority of the first few days was spent doing necessary administrative tasks (computer training, how to bill time, etc).  Though not terribly exciting, these necessary administrative tasks were broken apart nicely by more enjoyable events, such as an all-attorney breakfast, lunch with our liaisons, and a fabulous dinner at Sepia.  It has been a real pleasure meeting everyone, and each attorney and staff member seems genuinely excited for us to be here; the welcome was nothing short of warm and inviting.
