Professional Experience
Lisa J. Acevedo is a partner in the Health Law Group. She provides regulatory and transactional advice, and general counsel to clients representing virtually all aspects of health care. Ms. Acevedo counsels clients on compliance with statutes and regulations impacting companies doing business in the health care industry, including the Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark, the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and implementing regulations, including the Prescription Drug Marketing Act. Ms. Acevedo provides strategic counsel in the areas of federal health privacy laws, including HIPAA, FERPA, the Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Records Regulation as well as state laws governing the confidentiality of health information, medical records, mental health records and records containing other highly sensitive information. She provides guidance and counsel on privacy and security issues faced by clients as they implement interoperable electronic medical records systems and other technology involving health information. Ms. Acevedo also counsels clients on compliance with other federal and state privacy and security laws, regulations and standards governing personally identifiable information. She has assisted clients through security breaches, and the notification process, both at the federal and state levels. Ms. Acevedo was previously corporate counsel within Baxter International where she led the creation and implementation of the company’s global privacy program.
Ms. Acevedo has written several articles and delivered a number of speeches on privacy and security matters, including HIPAA compliance as well as health care fraud and abuse, Stark, tax-exempt issues and FDA issues. She has been an adjunct instructor of health law at Benedictine University in its Master’s in Public Health graduate program.
