Quarles & Brady IP Litigation Team Achieves $25 Million Settlement
After a long legal battle, Quarles & Brady LLP’s client Metso Minerals has settled its trade secret theft, patent infringement and computer hacking case against its competitor FLSmidth-Excel and several former Metso employees for a $25 million payment. “This was a very favorable result for our client in this complex case,” said David Cross, lead trial lawyer on the case and partner at Quarles & Brady. According to Cross, the scope of discovery in this case was staggering: more than 100 depositions; thousands of document demands, interrogatories and requests for admissions; 400+ filings with the court. The case involved client and opponent entities on
four continents, and the team eventually became involved in satellite copyright litigation in Australia and the retention of a Chilean lawyer to testify as an expert on Chilean trade secret and employment law.
The Quarles & Brady IP Litigation Team on the case also included Johanna Wilbert and
Patrick Murphy as well as lawyers spanning Quarles & Brady’s offices in Naples, Tucson, Phoenix, Madison, Chicago and Milwaukee.
