Kwame Raoul Honored by African American Alumni Association of The Illinois Institute of Technology11/20/12
CHICAGO, ILL. - The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP announced that Illinois State Senator Kwame Y. Raoul, a partner in the firm's Chicago office, was honored by the African American Alumni Association ("4A") of The Illinois Institute of Technology ("IIT") for his impact in civic engagement in the community.
Six alumni were recognized at the university's 2012 4A Homecoming for their impact on changing the course of their community in six key areas: civic engagement, education, distinguished young alumnus, professional achievement, trail blazer and young entrepreneur of the year. Raoul was recognized in the area of civic engagement for his role as the 13th District State Senator of Illinois. In this role, he has demonstrated a commitment to open and accessible government, and has proven his ability to get results for Chicago neighborhoods. He has been the chief sponsor of legislation to extend the Economic Development for a Growing Economy ("EDGE") tax credit to companies and recently succeeded in the effort to pass a comprehensive workers compensation reform that will save Illinois employers in excess of half a billion dollars.
Raoul is a member of the firm's Labor & Employment Group. He has extensive experience in higher education, labor and employment, and litigation law. He has also represented local governmental entities in finance and other matters. Raoul has represented the 13th district since 2004 when he was appointed to fill the vacancy of U.S. Senator Barack Obama and, since then, has successfully advanced legislation promoting pension reform, economic development, domestic violence prevention and political reform. He currently serves as chairman of the Senate Pensions and Investment Committee and Senate Committee on Redistricting, as vice-chairman of the Senate Criminal Law Committee and on the Judiciary Financial Institutions Committees.
Kwame earned his law degree from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law and his undergraduate degree from DePaul University.
