Nicole Stanton and Husband Named Man and Woman of the Year by Echo Magazine01/04/13
PHOENIX, ARIZ. - The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP announced that Nicole France Stanton, a partner in the firm's Phoenix office, and her husband, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton were named Man and Woman of the Year by Echo Magazine.
Man and Woman of the Year recipients are chosen by Echo Magazine staff for their efforts to spotlight LGBT issues and support the LGBT community. The Stanton's were featured in a cover story interview in Echo Magazine's December 20th Year in Review edition, which also included an honor roll of other local allies and a review of the top LGBT stories of the year.
Since Mayor Stanton took office in January 2012, the Stanton's have been advocates for many of the LGBT community's core issues, including anti-bullying, anti-discrimination, marriage equality and HIV/AIDS awareness. After becoming mayor, Stanton ordered a review of city ordinances to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Early in his term, he joined other U.S. mayors in supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples.
Nicole Stanton lobbied for an anti-bullying bill considered by the 2012 session of the Arizona Legislature and sponsored a summit on bullying for Arizona educators. She was recently named co-chair of the first RED Brunch, a local World AIDS Day celebration. In 2012 she received the Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign for her anti-bullying initiative, received the Mayor Phil Gordon Spirit Award from Phoenix Pride at their annual 2012 Pride Gala and the Outstanding Service by Straight Ally Award from Echo Magazine.
"Nicole and I appreciate the recognition from Echo Magazine, but we know much work is left to be done," said Mayor Stanton.
"With the victories for marriage equality at the ballot box in November, 2012 has truly been the Year of the Ally," said Glenn Gullickson, managing editor of Echo Magazine. "With their time and attention to our issues, Greg and Nicole Stanton have set an example for allies locally."
Stanton is a member of the firm's Commercial Litigation Group. Her experience includes defense of local and national law firms in legal malpractice actions and other business litigation disputes. She is a member of Charter 100 Women, serves as a founding board member and past president of the Women's Metropolitan Arts Council of the Phoenix Art Museum, and is an adjunct professor at Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law teaching professional responsibility. She was selected by her peers in 2011 and 2012 for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®. A graduate of Valley Leadership Class XXIX, Stanton was the YWCA of Maricopa County's 2011 Tribute to Women honoree. She received her law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Arizona and her bachelor's degree from the University of Utah.
