The CPO is “tasked with understanding what it means to keep information safe and private, and making sure the program works the way it is supposed to.” Privacy focuses on individuals’ rights to their information and to control how it gets used. The CPO is “responsible for individuals’ rights to control how their information is used and is responsible for the company’s need to protect that information on behalf of the people who have entrusted it to the company,” Margaret Utterback, a partner at Quarles & Brady, said.
