Diversity & Inclusion: Firm Initiatives
Even in an open environment in which diversity is welcomed, sometimes it takes a little extra work to ensure that everyone has a genuine opportunity to realize their potential. The reward though, is clear: Every ounce of energy that we invest in our diverse employees pays us back in successful attorneys, strong leaders, and productive support staff.
Women in Leadership Initiative
This is the means by which we evaluate and account for the multifaceted action items, policies, and programs that affect women at our firm. Women in Leadership is comprised of the firm’s thought leaders, who create programs and policies that underpin sustainable careers at the firm. For example, at the request of the initiative, the firm has implemented flexible working arrangements and work/life balance policies that promote flexibility in the paths to partnership and leadership for female attorneys. The most visible product of the Women in Leadership Initiative is the Women’s Forum, which creates and hosts programs on professional and career development topics for women. The forum also organizes peer and group mentoring circles to facilitate the sharing of ideas and best practices.
Diverse Attorney Recruiting, Retention, and Promotion
Quarles & Brady recruits at institutions with high percentages of diverse lawyers and attends minority job fairs. We also seed the industry talent pool by providing minority scholarships and internships. Diverse associates are assigned a second, diverse mentor to help guide them along their career paths. And every few years, we schedule a retreat for diverse attorneys, where they hear from speakers on pertinent topics and engage in career development exercises just for them.
Family-Friendly Work Policies
Flexible work schedules and parental leave aren’t limited to diverse employees, but they’re part of our plan to make sure the rest of the demands on our attorneys’ lives don’t stand in the way of a successful career. For example, Quarles & Brady has developed a path to partnership for committed parents. Additionally, maternity and paternity leave is fully paid for our associates who are starting families, and the firm extends full benefits to domestic partners. In other words, we don't want to lose our talented lawyers because they don't feel able to balance their home and work lives.
