Diversity & Inclusion: Firm Initiatives
Even in an open environment in which diversity is welcomed, sometimes it takes a little extra work to ensure that everyone has a genuine opportunity to realize their potential. The reward though, is clear: Every ounce of energy that we invest in our diverse employees pays us back in successful attorneys, strong leaders, and productive support staff.
Women in Leadership Initiative
This is the means by which we evaluate and account for the multifaceted action items, policies, and programs that affect women at our firm. Women in Leadership is comprised of the firm’s thought leaders, who create programs and policies that underpin sustainable careers at the firm. For example, at the request of the initiative, the firm has implemented flexible working arrangements and work/life balance policies that promote flexibility in the paths to partnership and leadership for female attorneys. The most visible product of the Women in Leadership Initiative is the Women’s Forum, which creates and hosts programs on professional and career development topics for women. The forum also organizes peer and group mentoring circles to facilitate the sharing of ideas and best practices.
Diverse Attorney Recruiting, Retention, and Promotion
Quarles & Brady recruits at job fairs and law schools with high percentages of diverse law students. The firm is the proud sponsor of the LEO Fellowship at University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School. The fellowship provides financial assistance to a law student for three consecutive years and the opportunity to participate as a summer associate in the Quarles & Brady's Summer Program. Diverse summer associates have attended the 1L Scholar Program hosted by Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). The firm annually sponsors several diverse associates and recent partners to participate in the LCLD Pathfinders and Fellows programs. Numerous diverse and women attorneys have participated in executive leadership training, including at Northwestern University and Harvard.
Diverse lateral associates are provided with the option of a second, diverse mentor who serve as an additional resource from the first day at the firm until they reach partnership. Our diversity retreats provide all partners and associates with an opportunity to reinforce their sense of community and provides opportunities to network and discuss ways to cross-sell and develop new client relationships.
Business Resource Groups
The firm sponsors Business Resource Groups (BRG), including Asian, African American, Hispanic/Latino, LGBTQ, all diverse attorneys, and Women's Forum. The BRGs create internal networks for our diverse and women attorneys to assist with professional development, networking, and business development, and to foster an increased sense of community and camaraderie in the workplace.
Unconscious Bias Training
We believe in an inclusive and collaborative culture that values the differences that our staff and attorneys bring to the workplace. Our collective diversity of experiences and viewpoints enhances the service we provide to our clients. Quarles & Brady is committed to helping each member of the firm do their best work and provides firm wide training that creates awareness of unconscious bias, its implications, and how to interrupt the biases for greater inclusivity.
Family-Friendly Work Policies
Employees value flexibility, so we designed our benefit plans to provide core coverage around health, life, disability, and saving for retirement, surrounded by numerous additional offerings covering areas, such as vision, dental, extra life coverage, accident and critical illness protection, identity protection, and even coverage for the furry friends in your life with pet insurance. You can insure your family at the same percent of premium as you pay for yourself, and benefit plans include coverage for same or opposite sex domestic partners/spouses. If you plan to start a family, we offer paid maternity and paternity leave for our attorneys, coupled with flexibility in your return to work schedule. New parents receive a packet full of information on leave options, childcare referral benefits, Bright Horizon's back-up care program, and more, including a gift for the baby. Programs are also in place for employees with eldercare concerns, student loan debt, or an interest in staying active and healthy. We offer something for everyone, so that our talented lawyers are able to balance their home and work lives.
