IP Portfolio Development
Jack Cook works with national and global businesses developing new and innovative products and services and world-renowned research institutions. He provides strategic guidance to efficiently manage worldwide IP portfolios aligned with product roadmaps or commercialization opportunities. Jack works with a diverse IP team at Quarles to partner with clients to understand their business plans and provide innovative counsel that connects IP and legal strategy with business and industry opportunities.
For example, Jack recently assisted a highly diversified manufacturer with mapping its IP assets across different business units to leverage protection strategies from one business unit for the advantage of another business unit. The result was a new layer of protection for each business unit, which then served to protect an important product line against design alternatives being sought by a competitor.
Jack also assists research institutions to develop, build, and manage large IP portfolios focused on licensing and commercialization opportunities. In one example, Jack assisted a client with developing and licensing a particular portfolio across the medical-device industry. At recent count, over 90 percent of the portfolio was licensed for over $100 million in total revenue.
Jack’s engineering background provides the basis for his work in the electrical, mechanical, industrial, software, high-tech, medical device, and medical imaging arts. He assists with the formation of large patent portfolios; conducts reviews in matters related to patentability, patent (in)validity, and patent infringement; and conducts clearance/infringement analysis. Jack also advises clients on the balance between patent protection and trade secret protection, conducts trade secret audits, and creates trade secret management plans.
