Quarles & Brady Takes Pro Bono Case to 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and Wins

20-Year Conviction Overturned in Criminal Pro Bono Case

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP today announced its victory on behalf of pro bono client Mr. Lee in the United States v. Lee case before the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. The firm took on the case as a pro bono assignment seeking to overturn a 20-year, criminal conviction that was based on the wrongful admission of a prior conviction at trial.

"We are honored to have represented Mr. Lee in our effort to right a wrong," said Deanna Conn, Quarles & Brady partner and case lead. "We have worked hard to ensure that he be treated fairly in our legal system."

Mr. Lee was convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute cocaine in 2011 after a prior unrelated conviction was admitted into the record at a second trial, following a hung jury in his first trial. A team of multiple lawyers worked for more than a year to appeal the conviction.  Such convictions brought up on appeal are typically affirmed, making this victory rare.

Additionally, the case also raised complex issues regarding the Fair Sentencing Act and other recent developments in criminal law.

"We are extremely proud of the Quarles team that worked hard to secure this victory," said Conn. "This case is a true testament to the Quarles' team approach and its unwavering commitment to pro bono work."

Quarles & Brady team members who worked on the case include:

Elizabeth C. Perkins
James E. Goldschmidt
