Joe Decker is a member of the Intellectual Property Group with a focus in patent prosecution and patent licensing as well as other IP-intensive transactions.
In patent prosecution, Joe prepares and prosecutes U.S. and international patent applications, responds to U.S. Patent Office communications and actions, and provides invalidity and freedom-to-operate opinions. On the transactional side, he works closely with national companies, research institutions, and technology transfer offices to promote their technology by strategically negotiating licensing terms and drafting licensing agreements to accurately reflect the client's desired objectives. The transactions he routinely assists with involve IP assets and maximizing the commercial value of such proprietary assets and their development. Joe also assists clients with data privacy and security, as well as other IT-related matters, including software licensing, SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, IT professional services agreements, outsourcing agreements, technology development agreements, and non-disclosure agreements.
During law school, Joe worked with numerous start-ups and small businesses as part of a legal clinic for entrepreneurs. He helped clients with a wide range of both corporate law and intellectual property matters, including articles of incorporation, sales agreements, terms-of-service, end-user license agreements, patent applications, and trademark registrations.
Prior to becoming an attorney, Joe was a Software Implementer at a leading software development company, where he led teams of analysts and clinicians in the design and implementation of medical software and clinical workflows. While at the company, he founded the support team for a multi-billion dollar governmental program (340B); participated in the design of a complex technical interface for purchasing medications; and collaborated in the design of core software functionality, user interface, system auditing, and reporting projects.
