David M. Blank quoted in “OIG Unveils Fraud Risk Indicator and Will List ‘High Risk’ Organizations That Refused CIAs”

Report on Medicare Compliance

Below is an excerpt:

"Former OIG senior counsel David Blank said the information that makes a provider high risk was already available—through the exclusion list, CIA database and self-disclosure settlements on the OIG website—but “OIG is highlighting and aggregating that information.”

But it also seems like the Fraud Risk Indicator is leverage that OIG can use to “have organizations rethink foregoing a CIA,” said Blank, who is with Quarles & Brady in Washington, D.C. Organizations “will have to weigh the expense of the CIA against the optics of being identified as a high risk provider.”
