Grant Sovern quoted in “Biz Beat: Report shows ‘high-skilled’ immigrants dominate in Madison”The Capital Times 06/09/11
Following is an excerpt:
Report co-author Matt Hall in an interview told Biz Beat that communities with major universities remain a draw for those seeking opportunities in this country. He says many immigrants come for the education but others come to work in research labs or technical fields.
"I'm not surprised at all that a place like Madison would have a highly educated immigrant population," says Hall, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Neither is Grant Sovern, an immigration attorney with Quarles& Brady in Madison. Sovern says the general public has no idea of the contributions being made here by new arrivals from around the globe, whether they are working at Epic Systems or teaching at the UW.
"We are attracting the best and brightest and it's not just to attend the university," he says. "This report shows what having an educated, forward-thinking community can do to help the economy."
