John L. Barlament quoted in article “FTC urges security, privacy for Web-connected devices and ‘Internet of Things’”
Westlaw Journal Computer & Internet 02/26/15
Following is an excerpt:
“The FTC wants to encourage innovation and is worried about regulating too stringently in this area,” he added. “But it also wants companies to ‘play fair’ and offer consumers some privacy and security protections.”
Barlament also said a wide variety of companies should take note of this report, including product manufacturers that are not traditionally part of the electronics or hightech industries.
“More and more companies are going to be collecting this type of information,” Barlament said. “[They] should review the report and consider implementing the FTC’s recommendations, such as trying to gather only the ‘minimum amount’ of information needed by the company.”
