The former chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission will join Quarles & Brady LLP as chair of the firm's Indian law and policy group, while also taking on a new role as an ambassador for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the firm said Tuesday.

Jonodev Osceola Chaudhuri will start at the firm's Washington, D.C., office May 21 after spending six years heading up the commission. Chaudhuri told Law360 Wednesday that he enjoyed his tenure at the NIGC immensely, and was proud to have worked with "an incredible team" on the important work of supporting tribal sovereignty and self-determination.

He said that moving on from the regulator at a time of his own choosing allowed him to ensure his transition from the NIGC is smooth and stable.

"I've been living on borrowed time for quite some time, and it's been clear to me that a move would have to be made at some point very soon," he said. "And the fact that the timing has worked out so that I can transition to being able to serve the needs of my nation, as well as go back to serving in the legal community is very fortunate and I'm thankful for the timing."
