Quarles & Brady First Tucson Firm to Support Southern Arizona Legal Aid New Administrative Assistant Initiative Volunteer Program09/16/13
TUCSON, ARIZ. - Quarles & Brady is the first law firm in Tucson to participate in Southern Arizona Legal Aid's (SALA) new Administrative Assistants Initiative. This innovative program will support SALA's Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) and may be one of the first of its kind in the nation.
"Our office has seen an increase in the legal needs of the poor and a decrease in funding. It was a challenge for our staff to meet the administrative needs of the Volunteer Lawyers Program," said Michele Mirto, SALA's VLP Director. In 2012, the VLP coordinated 1,320 volunteer lawyers and 90 volunteer law students. Together these volunteers assisted more than 3,000 clients, providing nearly 3,000 hours of free civil legal services valued at $600,000.
"When Quarles & Brady's partners saw the extent of the SALA VLP's need for assistance, they knew the importance of signing up as the first law firm to volunteer staff to the Initiative and to help encourage other Tucson area practices," Mirto said. "Quarles & Brady's leadership saw the value of recruiting volunteers to assist us with clerical and administrative functions and tasks, so we could free up staff to support the work of volunteer lawyers."
"We were more than eager and able to do our part to help SALA and help them stretch their limited resources to be able to provide more legal services to those in need," said Luis Ochoa, a Quarles & Brady Partner. The firm's current commitment is to loan staff to SALA twice a month in four-hour increments.
SALA is looking to other law firms in Southern Arizona to sign up for the Administrative Assistant Initiative volunteer program.
