PHOENIX, ARIZ. - The Phoenix Steering Committee of the Human Rights Campaign ("HRC") presented Quarles & Brady LLP with its 2012 Corporate Equality Award at their annual Gala on March 24. The theme of the eighth annual celebration was "Be Part of Equality".
Quarles & Brady was recognized for being a consistent supporter of the HRC and creating internal programs and policies specifically designed to address the needs of their Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual and Transgender ("LGBT") employees. They actively utilize the HRC's varied and free trainings, among them transgender inclusion and coming out in the workplace. Additionally, the Firm supports varied LGBT initiatives in the market through memberships and sponsorships.
Among the Firm policies that directly impact LGBT employees:
- Domestic Partner Benefits - Extending insurance coverage, funeral leave, parental leave, sick leave and leave of absence to domestic partners - same or opposite sex - and their children.
- Salary "Gross-Up" - Eliminated the inequitable additional costs faced by employees whose same-sex domestic partner is covered under Quarles & Brady's health insurance plan.
- Minority Liaisons - Assigns Mentors that serve as a voice for diverse associates within the Firm. The program is designed to foster an environment that encourages associates of historically underrepresented backgrounds to build careers with Quarles & Brady.
- Diversity and Inclusion Councils - The Council is tasked with encouraging a high degree of inclusion, involvement and education among lawyers and staff. Diversity and Inclusion Councils facilitate cultural learning activities, organize celebrations, develop diversity training and champion internal communications.
Accepting the award on behalf of Quarles was George Marek, partner and LGBT Affinity Group Leader and Rhea Hernandez, Diversity & Community Relations Associate.
"We are committed to ensuring that employees, no matter their job title, feel personally empowered in this organization, said John W. Daniels Jr., chairman of Quarles & Brady LLP. If you're going to be a different kind of organization, you have to understand the value of people."
