Q: What skill was most important for you in becoming a rainmaker?
A: I think my experience in handling high profile cases and track record of success — especially in going to trial and winning complex cases — coupled with everything I’ve gleaned from working in partnership with some of best and brightest attorneys in the country certainly contributes to my success.
I also think my ability to bring a strong team to the table — one focused on results — makes a difference to our clients, and to potential clients.
Our team at Quarles & Brady, for example, comprises a diverse and collaborative group of highly skilled attorneys who efficiently help clients address human resource issues and otherwise solve their people problems, consistent with each unique culture and tolerance for risk. Together with my team, we are able to provide a depth and breadth of expertise in areas that run the gamut.
And even beyond the complete range of labor and employment services we provide, we have experienced attorneys at our fingertips who are specialists in everything from franchise to environmental to real estate law who can help us to go beyond just the initial need of our clients, allowing us to assist them in everything related to their business over the long term.
A final key ingredient to my success in rainmaking — develop a thick skin. The employment litigation field is littered with talented attorneys, meaning not every client will be a fit or a “win.” Instead of focusing on just our wins or (perceived) losses, I always step back and look at the bigger picture — oftentimes what I learn from a “loss” is far greater than from even the biggest of wins.
