Andre Fiebig Shares Insight in Global Trade Review Article About U.S. Government Crackdown on Customs Fraud
Andre Fiebig, a Quarles & Brady partner in the Business Law Practice Group, was quoted in a Global Trade Review article about the U.S. government crackdown on customs fraud. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently uncovered over $400 million in unpaid trade duties this year. At the same time, the Department of Justice is ramping up enforcement with whistleblower incentives and the False Claims Act to uncover fraud.

Undervaluing goods to avoid paying higher duties as tariffs change via a dual invoicing schemes is common in the customs world, explains Andre Fiebig, partner at law firm Quarles.

“Once you involve an employee, you better employ them for the rest of their lives, because as soon as you fire them, who are they going to call? They’re going to call a lawyer. They’re going to go to the Department of Justice and get a lot more money from you. And the government knows this,” Fiebig says.
