Maria Kallmeyer Discusses H-1B Visa Fee’s Effect on Health Care Industry in Healthcare Financial Management Association Article
Maria Kallmeyer, a Chicago-based partner and national chair of Quarles & Brady’s Immigration & Mobility Practice Group, discussed the new H-1B visa fee and its effect on the health care industry in a Healthcare Financial Management Association article.
In the wake of the White House’s implementation of a $100,000 fee per H-1B visa application, Kallmeyer said it has had a negative impact on hospitals, particularly with the hiring of international nurses and physicians. Another issue Kallmeyer addressed is that international physicians train in the U.S. while on a J-1 work-study visa as part of their residency or fellowship. Now, the $100,000 H-1B application fee applies to some of these international physicians. Hospitals, particularly ones in rural or underserved areas, rely on this international pipeline and will most likely see a reduction in not only H-1B visa applications but also J-1 work-study visas.
