Retired Quarles & Brady Partner James Friedman Appointed to Four-Year Term as Wisconsin Supreme Court Referee

The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP announced that James Friedman, a retired Partner in the firm's Milwaukee office, has been has been appointed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court to serve a four-year term as Referee, effective January 1, 2020.

As a Wisconsin Supreme Court Referee, Friedman will have the powers of a judge trying a civil action and will preside at public hearings to consider allegations of misconduct against lawyers. He is among nine former judges and five attorneys appointed as referees throughout the state.

During his legal career, Friedman provided counsel to clients in legal, financial and business matters for more than 40 years. A member of the firm's Business Law practice group and former National Chair of the Banking & Financial Institutions practice group, he represented banks in Wisconsin and had experience dealing with federal and state bank regulators.

Friedman previously served the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Office of Lawyer Regulation as a Member and Vice Chair of the Preliminary Review Committee.  Additionally, he is a past Director, and past member of the Executive and Audit Committees of the Wisconsin Association of Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC). Friedman holds a Bachelor of Arts from Marquette University and a Juris Doctor from University of Notre Dame Law School.
