George Marek Selected as a Diversity in Business Awards Honoree by the Wisconsin Law Journal

News Release

MILWAUKEE — The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP today announced that George Marek, a partner in the firm's Milwaukee office, has been selected as an honoree for the Wisconsin Law Journal's Diversity in Business Awards.

Marek has been a member of the firm's Diversity & Inclusion Committee for many years and has served as the national co-chair since 2015. In 2017, Marek recognized the need for written diversity and inclusion policies to ensure continuity and continued focus over time and through leadership changes.

The committee recommended several formal policies such as equitable leadership training and execution for minority, LGBT and women attorneys, as well as diverse recruiting of law school students and lateral attorneys. Recruitment tracking has shown that the number of diverse and female attorneys at the firm and on firm committees and within leadership positions has gone up.

Marek introduced unconscious bias training to the firm to overwhelmingly positive feedback. He oversees the firm's Diversity & Inclusion Council, sponsors several business resource groups for women and diverse attorneys, participates in diverse attorney job fairs and recruiting, and mentors other diverse attorneys.

A member of the firm's Energy, Environment & Natural Resources practice group, Marek counsels clients in transactional due diligence and risk assessment in business and real estate transactions, as well as the assessment, cleanup, and development of Brownfields sites. He advises clients on the siting and operation of landfills, wind farm projects, underground and aboveground storage tank regulation, and coordinating the investigation and remediation of toxic mold. He also represents corporate, municipal and individual clients in environmental enforcement matters. He recently presented a webinar on EPA's new hazardous waste pharmaceutical rules.

The Wisconsin Law Journal's Diversity in Business Awards are given to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated a significant contribution toward creating a diverse and inclusive business/academic/social community though the implementation of policies, procedures, initiatives, and/or programs.

Marek will be honored at the awards ceremony held on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
